SafetyWing Nomad Insurance for combat sports in Thailand

Cheap, monthly and open to most nationalities. Martial arts and boxing need the Adventure Sports add-on, and its rules sit awkwardly with camp training.

Our verdict

SafetyWing Nomad Insurance Essential, with the Adventure Sports add-on, lists boxing and martial arts as covered, but only for classes, solo training, private lessons and informal group training. The same rules say the activity must not involve regular or scheduled practices and must not include any intention to compete. A twice-a-day camp schedule may fall foul of that, so get SafetyWing's written OK first. It may suit a casual trainer taking a few classes. Anyone preparing for a fight, amateur or paid, should look elsewhere.

What it covers for combat sports

The deciding text is SafetyWing's help-centre description of the Adventure Sports add-on for the Essential plan version effective February 2026. Covered activities include Boxing and Martial arts. Cover applies to Attending classes, Solo training, Private lessons and Informal group training. Excluded: Professional, organized, or rewarded sports.

Price, limits and excess

US$72.72 / 4 weeksage 18–39, Essential + add-on (about US$79 a month)
US$100,000maximum for injuries under the add-on
Nonedeductible on either plan
US$100,000evacuation to a better hospital, lifetime

Price. US$62.72 per 4 weeks for the Essential plan at ages 18–39, excluding the US, plus US$10 per 28 days for the Adventure Sports add-on. Taken from SafetyWing's pricing page and FAQ on 27 Oct 2026. The add-on is sold only on auto-renewing subscriptions and only when you first buy; it cannot be added to an active plan.

Limits. Essential has a US$250,000 overall limit, but the add-on has a maximum limit of $100,000. A Muay Thai injury is therefore capped at US$100,000. The add-on does not apply in your home country.

Evacuation. Transport from one medical facility to another when the first can't treat you, up to US$100,000 in your lifetime (US$25,000 if linked to a pre-existing condition), plus up to US$5,000 for a ticket back to the area you were evacuated from. A medical flight to your home country is not stated in the help-centre text we read. Everything must be approved in advance by SafetyWing.

Excess. Nomad Insurance does not have a deductible on either plan! (FAQ).

Pre-existing conditions. Essential doesn't cover them. On the current (4.0) plan, that means any condition from the 180 days before your start date.

Who can buy it

Most nationalities and residents, aged 14 days to 69 for Essential. People who are sanctioned, or whose home country is, are excluded, and some destinations are excluded. US citizens can buy Essential, but not the US add-on. You can sign up before you leave or while already travelling.

Claims in Thailand

  • Direct billing: not standard. The FAQ says You can also reach out to our team if you would like to set up direct billing with the hospital. Expect to pay first at clinics, and contact SafetyWing early for any admission.
  • How to claim: log in to your dashboard and choose “Make a claim”. SafetyWing says claims are typically paid by bank transfer within 10 business days.
  • Documents: original receipts showing payment; original itemised invoices (not just the total spent); a medical report with symptoms, when they started, the diagnosis and the treatment plan. Ask the doctor to write down how you were hurt, as the activity rules decide the claim.
  • Evacuation: never arrange it yourself; SafetyWing must approve and organise it.
