What we checked
We looked at 124 travel insurance plans that people from around the world can buy for a trip to Thailand. For each one we read the sports section and exclusions of the policy wording, or the insurer's own documents when the wording wasn't public, and recorded:
- Who can buy it: the countries whose residents the insurer sells to.
- Training and sparring, amateur fights and paid fights: one status each, with a one-line reason taken from the wording.
- MMA differences: plans that treat MMA or cage fighting differently from Muay Thai.
- Limits: the overall medical limit, any separate limit for sports injuries, and whether a medical flight home is covered.
- Price: from each insurer's own online quote form, for one example traveller: age 30, 30 days in Thailand, 1–30 December 2026, with the sport option Muay Thai needs. Some insurers asked for a name, email or ID number before showing a price; for those we show "Quote".
- Reputation: the insurer's Trustpilot rating, when it has at least 20 reviews.
We also wrote to insurers whose wording was unclear and asked them directly. We update a plan when an insurer answers in writing.
What the statuses mean
| Status | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Covered | The wording clearly covers it. |
| With add-on | Covered if you buy a named sports pack or upgrade. |
| Ask insurer first | The wording suggests cover but isn't clear enough to rely on. Get the insurer's answer in writing before you train or fight. |
| Limited | Only training without contact or sparring. |
| Not covered | Excluded by the wording. |
| Unclear | The wording doesn't say, and we couldn't confirm it. |
Fighting also needs training cover, so a plan only counts as covering fights if it covers training too.
How the score out of 10 works
We only score plans you can buy and that cover what you'll do (covered, add-on or ask first). Then:
| Training only | Amateur or paid fights | |
|---|---|---|
| Price | 40% | 25% |
| Reputation | 30% | 25% |
| Cover | 30% | 50% |
- Price: the cheapest plan that covers you gets 10; others score lower in proportion. Plans with no online price get 5.
- Reputation: the Trustpilot rating times 2. Unknown gets 5.
- Cover: 10 if the limit for sports injuries is at least twice a realistic worst case, 8.5 if it covers the worst case, less below that, and 6 if no limit is stated. We take off 2 points with no flight home (1 if it's unclear), 0.5 for needing an add-on and 2 for "ask the insurer first". For fights, an unconfirmed fight costs 4 points and unconfirmed training 1, so a plan that confirms the fight beats one that only confirms training.
- Evidence: we take off 0.5 when our only source is a third party or an old document.
The realistic worst case is the most expensive injury in our Thai hospital cost data plus a medical flight home to your region. Cover above twice that earns no extra points: a $10M limit doesn't make a plan better for you than a $1M one if you'll never use it.
When no plan confirms your fight
For amateur and paid fights, we only call a plan the best match when its wording confirms the fight itself. When none does, we say so, show the highest-scoring plan as the closest match, and give you an email to send the insurer before you fight. As of 28 October 2026, no plan we track confirms paid fights, and only three, all for UK residents, confirm amateur fights.
Why one plan wins in most countries
A plan sold to residents of every country competes in every country, and plans sold in a single country usually cost more: the UK sports specialists, for example, cost two to six times as much for a month of Muay Thai cover. So for training, the same plan comes top almost everywhere. The result says so, and lists what can change the answer instead: being in Thailand already, a short trip, fighting, or a policy you already have.
What we can't promise
- Policies change. Always read the current wording before you buy, and check the date on our data.
- An insurer decides each claim on its own terms. Our status is our reading of the wording, not a guarantee.
- We checked plans for Muay Thai and MMA. Boxing, kickboxing and BJJ can be treated differently, so check the wording for your sport.
- Insurers don't pay to be listed or to change their score. See our affiliate disclosure.
